3rd Time’s a Charm – 2026 Report by Chris Henkel
The Austin Yacht Club’s 3rd Annual Lucky Charm Regatta once again delivered a standout early-season racing experience on Lake Travis. Held on Saturday, March 14, just ahead of St. Patrick’s Day, the single-day, one-design event brought together competitive fleets of ILCA (Laser), Sunfish, and Melges 15 sailors. Following the club’s established format, fleets met minimum participation thresholds, with particularly solid representation in the ILCA classes (4, 6, and 7), which also counted toward the 2026 District 15 Circuit standings.
Sailors were greeted with near-perfect Central Texas spring conditions. The day began with a slight morning chill in the upper 50s°F, then warmed steadily into the low 80s by mid-afternoon. A southerly breeze filled in early and built throughout the day, with a range of roughly 5 to 15 knots and gusts reaching into the low 20s. The result was classic Lake Travis sailing: oscillating winds, shifting pressure lines, and enough variability to reward tactical awareness and adaptability.
Under the direction of PRO Terry Schertz, the race committee delivered six excellent races on a windward-leeward course with offset and gate, each lasting approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Just as notable as the race management was the physical demand of the day. Over the course of six races and roughly five hours on the water, ILCA sailors covered an estimated 20 to 25 miles of Lake Travis. The regatta proved to be an endurance test–a full-body workout that, while demanding, remained thoroughly enjoyable and made the Shepherd’s Pie even more delicious.
Beyond the racing, the Lucky Charm Regatta continues to stand out for its atmosphere and hospitality. AYC’s volunteers created a festive, welcoming environment with Irish-themed food, decorations, and music, bringing a sense of fun and camaraderie that carried from the clubhouse to the racecourse and back again. It’s this combination of quality racing and community spirit that has quickly made the event a favorite among both local sailors and visitors.
Three years in, this regatta is proving to be more than just a fun seasonal event; it’s become a “must-do” regatta for sailors of all skill levels. Save the Date, Saturday, March 13, 2027!
